E – I – E – I – O!!  It’s a Farm Contest for Kids!

The Guilford Agricultural Society -- producers of the Guilford Fair Sept. 21 though 23 --in conjunction with media sponsor Shore Publishing, are giving kids a chance to share their thoughts on the importance of agriculture in Connecticut.  Winners in three categories will read their stories on the main stage at the Fair.

The tradition of writing about the Fair actually dates back to 1941.  Today, as we see a renewed interest in farming, the contest includes more ages, more towns and photos and artwork that illustrate essays.

Winners in three categories will receive age-appropriate awards, and win family four-packs of tickets to the Guilford Fair – a U.S. Library of Congress Local Legacy event, started in 1859.  ALL entrants will receive a ribbon and certificate of participation.  Judges may provide additional awards depending on the level of participation.

Rules:

Any children who are in grades one through eight this Fall in any Connecticut town may enter.  The topic is: Why is agriculture/farming important in Connecticut?  This may or may not include something about the Guilford Fair.  It’s up to the entrant.  Original photos and/or artwork that illustrate the story are OPTIONAL but encouraged!

Grades 1-3 – 100-word maximum with students’ original photos and artwork optional.

Grades 4-6 – 200-300 words with students’ original photos and artwork optional.

Grades 6-8 -  300-500 words with students’ original photos and artwork optional.

All entries must be received by regular mail or e-mailed by September 16, 2007.  To enter, email essays to contest@guilfordfair.org. or use regular mail and send them to the Guilford Agricultural Society, Inc., c/o Barbara Puffer, 35 Shore Drive, Guilford, CT  06437.

All entries will be judged by a panel of judges representing the Agricultural Society, Shore Publishing and other officials.  Ceremonies will take place at a time to be announced at the Fair.  Winners will be notified by September 19th and all entries will be on display during the Guilford Fair.  Winning entries may be publicized and displayed further.

Attention all entrants:

PLEASE be sure to include age, school and telephone number with your entry.
